Ecommerce Website vs Shopify vs WooCommerce: Which Is Best?

The BizTheme Team August 16, 2026 11 Min. Lesezeit
For most new stores, Shopify is the pragmatic choice: quick to launch, hosted and maintained for you, in exchange for a monthly fee and platform limits. WooCommerce suits teams already on WordPress who want more control and lower licensing costs but can handle hosting and updates. A fully custom ecommerce website only makes sense when your catalogue, pricing, or integration needs genuinely fall outside what those platforms do well. Choose based on your products, your team, and where the business is heading.

The three options, briefly

Shopify is a hosted platform: you pay a monthly subscription and transaction-related fees, and Shopify handles hosting, security and updates. WooCommerce is an open-source plugin for WordPress: the software is free, but you arrange hosting, maintenance and many features through additional plugins. A custom ecommerce website is built to your specification on a framework of your choice, giving total control and total responsibility.

When Shopify is the right call

  • You want to launch quickly and start selling
  • You would rather not manage hosting, security or updates
  • Your catalogue and pricing are fairly standard
  • You are happy to work within a proven, opinionated system

Most first stores fit here. The monthly fee buys you time and reliability. See Shopify store setup.

When WooCommerce fits better

  • Your site already runs on WordPress and content is central
  • You want more control over checkout, data and hosting
  • You have someone to handle updates, backups and plugin conflicts
  • You want to avoid per-sale platform fees as volume grows

WooCommerce rewards teams that can look after it. See WooCommerce setup.

When a custom ecommerce website is justified

A custom build is the right answer only when the platforms genuinely get in the way: complex B2B pricing and approval flows, deep integration with an ERP or a bespoke fulfilment system, an unusual product configurator, very high traffic with specific performance needs, or a storefront that is really an application with a catalogue attached. If your requirements are ordinary, a custom build mostly adds cost and maintenance without a matching return.

Pick the platform that fits your requirements today and your roadmap for two years. You can migrate later — but only if there is a real reason to.

Payments, shipping and tax apply to all three

Whatever platform you choose, you will configure a payment provider, shipping rules and tax handling. These are often where a "simple" store gets complicated. The payment gateway integration page covers choosing and connecting a provider.

A simple way to decide

Match yourself to a row

  • Standard products, want speed and low maintenance — Shopify
  • Content-led business already on WordPress, have technical support — WooCommerce
  • Requirements that neither platform handles cleanly — custom build
  • Still unsure — start on a platform; migrating later is cheaper than over-building now

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify or WooCommerce cheaper?
It depends on volume and who maintains the site. Shopify has a predictable monthly fee plus app and transaction costs. WooCommerce has lower licensing cost but you pay for hosting, premium plugins and maintenance time. At low volume they are comparable; at higher volume the comparison depends heavily on which Shopify apps and WooCommerce plugins you need.
Can I move from Shopify to WooCommerce later, or the other way?
Yes. Products, customers and orders can be migrated between platforms, and between either platform and a custom build. It is a project with cost and risk, so it is worth choosing well now — but it is not a permanent lock-in.
Do I need a custom ecommerce website?
Most stores do not. A custom build is worth it when you have complex B2B pricing, deep ERP or fulfilment integration, an unusual product configurator, or performance needs the platforms cannot meet. For standard catalogues, Shopify or WooCommerce will serve you better for less.
Which platform is best for SEO?
All three can rank well. SEO outcomes depend far more on site structure, page speed, content quality and internal linking than on the platform name. WooCommerce and custom builds give more direct control over technical details; Shopify handles more for you but is capable.
